The Malaysian Inaugural Economics Debate Championship (MIEDC): My Experience

Written August 26. 2007 in School, Home, Competition
I am back for the rest of the semester. The short trip home was very satisfying, I must say. I spent a lot of time at home (which I have longed to do!) Despite losing horribly for the competition earlier, I never regret joining it. Oh well, if you were anticipating for the results, my team finished almost last place every round of the preliminary rounds hence, we did not qualify ourselves for the following rounds.

I consoled myself numerous times as my ultimate objective of joining this competition was to go home. To top it all, I had NO debating experience before this. We were selected for the fact that this was a debate based on Economics motions. But hell, neither of them had any Economics knowledge.

We debated in the British Parliamentary format which made a huge difference in comparison to the normal 3 on 3 Asian debating style. There are 4 teams debating with 2 members in each team. Formats and all, it took us a while to digest *LOL*

It was just unfortunate that UNIMAS decided to send their economics students instead of the debate team. These debaters do not even know the motion well enough to debate on the topics. But heck again, I did not go with a goal.

Needless to elaborate, we lost. However, I am glad I made a lot of new friends from all over the country. There were even 3 teams from Thailand which made it more 'international' *LOL* And I guess, it was the university's objective also, to make its name known to the rest of the country as well, did not matter if we win or not. Again, it could have been better if the motions were defined correctly ;)
